Outline: Driving towards the Akrotiri peninsula, the monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon, set on a wonderfully overgrown landscape of olive groves and cypress trees, and  the archaeological site of Aptera, on an impressive position with great vistas. Stop at the ‘kafeneion’ of Maheri, one of the most authentic and unspoilt Cretan villages for refreshments at a typical before visiting the studio of a known local ceramicist. On your way to Samonas village, enjoy the frescoes of the Byzantine chapel of Agios Nikolaos, before sitting down for a delicious Cretan meal at a family-run taverna – located on a privileged vista point overlooking the valley and the sea beyond.
